There are two types of ropes: power ropes and static ropes. Power ropes are ropes with elastic contraction ability, while static ropes have almost no elasticity or very little elasticity, and do not have the ability to stretch or contract. The rope used for the speed differential is a static rope, also known as a steel wire rope.
Some people are very puzzled about this point. The power rope has elasticity and better cushioning effect, but this differential uses a static rope, which is unreasonable. At first glance, it may sound reasonable, but upon closer consideration, you will understand the reasons behind it.
It is true that power ropes have a more cushioning effect, but don't ignore one thing. The cushioning effect is mostly used for long-distance falls to reduce the impact force caused by the fall. Similar to the rope used in bungee jumping, which is a typical power rope, but when the differential is used, will the person who falls fall fall a long distance? Obviously not.
Reducing impact force does not necessarily require the use of power rope cushioning to solve it. The impact force generated by the self-locking of the differential within 0.2 meters is less than 3000N, which will not cause any harm to the human body, much more than using a buffer power rope directly.
And in some areas that are not particularly high, accidental falls may occur, and the power rope is not safe. Due to its extensibility, it is very likely to directly cause the operator to fall to the ground, while the static rope will not. So basically, speed reducers use static ropes, which are steel wire ropes.
